_SOUTHLIGHT PAVILION CONTEXT

_ THIS POST DISCUSSES THE SITUATION OF THE PAVILION AND THE PAVILIONS PLACE ON THE PLOT IN REGARDS TO THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT. 

_ A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT ANALYSES HAS BEEN CONDUCTED IN ORDER TO FULLY UNDERSTAND THE STUIOS DECISION TO INTEGRATE AND PLACE THE PAVILION ON THE PLOT. 

_THE SITUATION IN THE SCALE 1:500 SERVES ONLY AS A DEMONSTRATIVE IMAGE, IN  ORDER TO GET FAMILIAR WITH THE PLOT.
















_THE ANALYSES OF GREENERY AND PARKING HAS BEEN CONDUCTED TOGETHER  AS THE TWO  ARE CLOSELY CONNECTED THROUGH THE PROJECT. AS MENTIONED IN THE PREVIOUS CHAPTERS. THE NEW ZONING PLANS MADE THE REALISATION OF THIS PROJECT POSSIBLE. HENCE A LARGE NUMBER OF PARKING SPOTS AT THE CULTURAL CENTER HAVE BECOME OBSOLETE. CURRENTLY ONLY 80 SPOTS REMAIN IN THE PARKING LOT. THE REST CURRENTLY HOUSES THE NEW SOUTHLIGHT PAVILION AS WELL AS THE SURROUNDING GREENERY WHICH HAS BEEN PLANTED DURING THE PROJECT. THE RISK STUDENTS OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE HAVE DESIGNED THE GREEN PLAINS. A LARGE INCREASE OF GREENERY CAN BE NOTICED AFTER THE FINALISATION OF THE MODEL. IT ALSO SERVES AS A BUFFER FOR THE HEAVY TRAFIC SURROUNDING THE AREA. THE GREEN PLAINS ALLOW THE PAVILION TO BE PERCEIVED BETTER WIHTIN THE SPACE AND REDEFINE THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN THE PARKING LOT AND THE EXISTING SOUTHSIDE CULTURAL CENTER. _THE VISUALISATION OF THE ORIGINAL PLOT INDICATES THE SIZE OF THE PAVED AREAS AT THE LOCATION. MORE THAN 180 PARKING SPOTS HAVE BEEN PRESENT PRIOR TO THE INTERVENTION. AS NOTICABLE, NO GREENERY WAS PRESENT IN THE NORTHER SIDE OF THE PLOT. THE PARKING LOT HAD VIRTUALLY NO OTHER PURPOSE AND THE SPACE COULD NOT HAVE BEEN ACTIVATED.  











_THE ORIGNAL PLOT DISPLAYED IN GRAY SHOWS THE LARGE PARKING LOT WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY DESIGNED. THE PLOT CONTAINED MORE THAN 180 PARKING SPOTS. NO GREENERY WAS PRESENT AT THE SITE. THE SITE HAD NO ACOUSTIC ISOLATION FROM THE SURROUNDING BUSY AREA. THE PLOT NORTH OF THE SOUTHSIDE CULTURAL CENTRE HAD A SINGULAR USE AND COULDN'T BE ACTIVATED BY THE CENTRE FOR ANY OTHER PURPOSE. 


 












_THE ANALYSES SHOWS THE MODIFIED AREA IN YELLOW. THE PARKING LOT WAS SIGNIFICANTLY SHRANK IN ORDER TO MAKE ROOM FOR THE PAVILION AND THE SURROUNDING GREENERY. A TRANSITIONAL AREA WAS ACHIEVED THROUGH THIS. THE PAVILION ACTS AS A SOFT BOUNDARY WITHIN THE CENTRE AND DIVIDES THE PARKING AND THE CULTURAL CENTRE. THE MODIFICATION OF THE SPACE ALLOWS FOR THE ACTIVATION OF THE NORTHERS SIDE OF THE PLOT. NEW ACTIVITIES AND NEW MEANINGS ARE ASSIGNED IN THIS WAY TO THE SITE. 















_THE ANALYSES OF THE SURROUNDING TRAFIC (MONDAY 5 P.M CET) SHOWS THE HEAVY TRAFIC PRESENT AROUND THE SITE OF THE PROJECT. DUE TO A LARGE CONNECTING ROUTE TOWARDS THE CITY OF PROVIDENCE, A NUMBER OF ASPECTS HAS BEEN TAKING INTO ACCOUNT WHEN REDESIGNING THE PLOT.  MOST IMPORTANTLY THE NATURAL ACOUSTIC BUFFER WAS USED (GREENERY). THIS ERADICATES SOME OF THE NOISE, AND CREATED A MORE ENJOYABLE AND COLOURFUL SPACE WITHIN THE CULTURAL CENTR. THE PAVILION WAS PLACED ON TO THE WEST, CLOSER TO A SMALL ROAD RATHER THAN BEING PLACED NEXT TO THE BUSY 4 LANE ROAD.


_THE CONTEXT OF THE PAVILION SHOWS THE DEDICATION AND THE THINKING PROCESSES OF THE ARCHITECTS WHEN DESIGNING AT THE SPOT.
